Initiator und erster
Präsident der WFB war der ceylonesische buddhistische Gelehrte Gunapala Piyasena Malalasekara (* 1899, ✝ 1973). Die WFB stellt eine Art »Dachverband« buddhistischer Orden und Laienvereinigungen dar, bildet ein Forum des Dialogs und fördert die Zusammenarbeit auf gesamtbuddhistischer Ebene. Heute (1998) gehören der WFB Buddhisten aller Schulrichtungen (Theravada,
Mahayana,
Vajrayana [Lamaismus]) aus über 35 Ländern an.
